![]() ![]() In my case I bit off a little more than I should have for the day (back issues) and paid the price but no regrets. On the longer hike you will pass through Alpine Meadows, Tundra above treeline, lush forests, and pass a number of gorgeous lakes. In our case we continued along the ridge and depressions lining the valley before dropping back down the Bear River trail paralleling the creek of the same name, back down to the Stillwater Reservoir. The 6 mile trip to the Causeway and back is a perfect hike given the altitude and elevation gain, for getting the blood flowing. The hike to the causeway involves going from an elevation of 10,300 at Stillwater to 12,500 (I believe) at the pinnacle of the Causeway ridge. Myself, I walked across while filming, my GF scooted across on her butt either way is justifiable! The narrowest parts are not really that narrow, but they are very uneven, and if you do stumble the downside is ugly. We actually ended up deciding post hike that our sweet spot is 6 miles, LOL.Īll that being said, this was an incredible hike, the beauty is unsurpassed, and I've seen much of Colorado. The causeway itself is impressive, and it's scariness is going to be determined by your comfort with height and faith in your own ability to not trip over your own feet. That was a lot, for me and even my firefighter girlfriend. Also, you should probably have high clearance.ĭevil's Causeway and and Chinese Wall loop which according to the guide is 10.6 Miles, by the end of the day we had clocked 14 miles due to some detours and starting from our campsite. Getting to the trailhead with your vehicle requires some guess work as there are no real signs to it. But I guess it's perfectly possible, definitely when there's no wind. I admit I got down on my hands and knees and was nothing of a hero while doing so. When you make it to the top, you will need to cross the gut-wrenching land bridge and then back again to complete the hike. The last mile or so is brutal, climbing almost exponentially. Views in the Flat Tops Wilderness are simply magnificent. After a relatively flat beginning, along Stillwater Reservoir, you will start to ascend towards the Devil's Causeway, passing a beautiful mountain lake along the way. But as with all things Rocky Mountain, 'moderate', too, is a relative term. This review talks about the easiest, and I use this term relatively, way to get there, a direct out and back approach that requires 6 miles of hiking and that Alltrails rates as moderate. The highly recommended app and website Alltrails, which is every serious hiker's Bible, lists a number of possible hikes that go over the famed "Devil's Causeway", a very narrow, razorback-like land bridge. ![]()
